João Martins, Senior Private Banker at ABANCA Portugal is our Advisor of the Month. He has been in the industry for more than 20 years, working in a wide range of positions in the industry, from Equity trading to Private Banking. With very good skills and an extensive network, he has been successful in both technical and commercial positions. Currently in transition to a managerial position in Abanca Portugal.

What made you want to pursue a career in the financial industry? And what do you find more attractive about working in the asset management industry?

My father was the CFO of a company in the food sector. He has always had a great interest in all asset classes, especially investing in equities. He was my big inspiration and from a very young age I always wanted to pursue a position within the financial market system.

What does a normal day look like? How do you divide your different tasks?

I usually wake up very early in the morning, and always do my newspaper review, trying to stay updated with the latest news. Afterward, I always look at how the markets are performing, and if there is any need to take an early position within my client's portfolios.

When I arrive at the office, I look more in-depth into the portfolios and try to measure the impact of the latest news. Usually, I have meetings with clients, where I present my view on the current market situation and seek new opportunities to invest or any portfolio adjustments. Always keeping in mind the clients need, and their risk aversion.

What is in your view the most important part of wealth management and advisory?

I think the most important is the trust relationship built between me and my clients and to respect for their positioning in the financial markets. Keeping the KYC updated is a very important tool for this.

What are your clients asking for at the moment? And what would you advise in the current situation of the markets?

For the time being the clients want to position their portfolios to take advantage of the current market situation in the long term. Always keep in mind that “The stock market is a device for transferring money from the impatient to the patient.”- Warren Buffet

Which sectors do you think are particularly interesting at the moment?

I´ve been investing in the financial system, because of the rising interest rates. But, I think despite some volatility, the USA and China will perform well in the long term.

Have you seen a change in the profile of your clients in the last few years?

I´ve been seeing a great interest in bonds lately because of the higher yields. In the long term, some clients always prefer to stay invested in equities because if you use statistics, this asset tends to perform better in a long-term perspective.

How would you define yourself in 3 words?

Focused, self- confident, and resilient.
