Tabula Investment Management Limited has unveiled a pioneering exchange-traded commodity (ETC) product, the SMO Physical Gold ETC, designed with a robust focus on environmental, social, and governance (ESG) considerations. This ETC is a landmark offering in the realm of physical gold investment, offering unparalleled traceability and adherence to high ESG standards.

Key Features of the SMO Physical Gold ETC:

  1. Full Traceability and Responsible Sourcing:
    • BARS is the first exchange-traded physical gold product to provide full traceability of gold bars from mine to vault. Each ounce of gold can be traced to a carefully selected mine, accredited with the highest responsibility standards.
    • The product exclusively utilizes gold from a small number of named mines that have undergone independent audits to ensure compliance with rigorous ESG criteria.
  2. ESG Compliance and Accountability:
    • Participating mining companies, mines, and refiners are subject to extensive due diligence and ongoing monitoring by Single Mine Origin (SMO) Limited, an independent entity established in 2017.
    • The mines involved in the supply chain provide crucial social, environmental, and cultural support to local communities, and the extraction process refrains from using mercury.
  3. Ethical Sourcing and Transparency:
    • The initiative ensures that no gold originates from Russian sources or involves "recycled" gold of unknown provenance.
    • SMO Co-Founder Charlie Betts underscores the importance of full traceability across the supply chain, emphasizing that accountability and transparency are essential for assessing the social and environmental impacts of gold production.
  4. Partnership and Listing:
    • The SMO Physical Gold ETC lists on the London Stock Exchange, offering investors access to ethically sourced gold with a Total Expense Ratio (TER) of 0.29%.
    • The product is launched in collaboration with leading global gold custodian HSBC, ensuring the highest standards of security and reliability.

Significance of the Offering

Tabula CEO Michael John Lytle highlights the critical need for transparency and accountability in the gold supply chain, given the inherent ESG risks associated with gold production. By introducing the SMO Physical Gold ETC, Tabula aims to address existing shortcomings in the gold investment landscape and provide investors with a responsible and transparent option for exposure to physical gold.

The launch of this groundbreaking ETC signifies a pivotal step towards promoting sustainable investment practices within the gold industry, setting a new standard for responsible sourcing and ESG integration in commodity investments.
