BlackRock has announced the launch of the iShares World Thematic Rotation Active UCITS ETF (THRW), an actively managed global equity strategy that seeks to dynamically capture the themes driving the markets at any given time. The fund, domiciled under the UCITS structure and aimed at European investors, positions itself as a comprehensive solution that integrates theme selection, timing, and portfolio management into a single allocation.
The vehicle maintains between 200 and 300 positions in global equities and periodically updates its portfolio to take advantage of emerging trends and reduce exposure to those in decline. To do this, it identifies, classifies, and actively rotates among short, medium, and long-term themes as market leadership evolves.
The differential core of the THRW lies in its systematic investment process, backed by more than four decades of research from BlackRock's Systematic Equity team. The strategy uses artificial intelligence models to analyze around one million financial news stories annually, more than 5,000 quarterly earnings conferences, and approximately 1,000 thematic baskets and funds.
The advanced language models (LLM) process this volume of information to convert it into structured market themes, identifying connections between companies and new cross-sector trends that could influence returns. On a daily basis, a diversified modeling framework evaluates these themes and generates signals that guide the active selection of securities within a portfolio optimization process that weighs expected return, risk, and costs.
The result is a scalable and dynamic approach aimed at generating a consistent and repeatable alpha, all within a transparent and liquid ETF structure.
The launch comes in a context where the BlackRock Investment Institute (BII) warns that global equity returns are increasingly dispersed and are conditioned by a reduced set of structural megaforces. In this scenario, BII emphasizes the growing need for a more active approach, capable of dynamically repositioning as market leadership evolves over different time horizons.
The projections of the manager suggest that global active ETF assets will reach 4 trillion dollars in 2030, while the share of systematic strategies within active equity could grow from 11% in 2024 to 15% in that same year.
Systematic investment is accelerating in Europe, forming a key part of what we call 'Next Gen Active'. BlackRock seeks to expand investment options and increase accessibility through various vehicles, bringing the transparency, flexibility and convenience of ETFs to all types of investment approaches.
