DWS has launched the Xtrackers Galaxy MSCI Physical Crypto Market ETC Securities (ISIN: CH1492505164), a new product that facilitates institutional investors' access to the main cryptocurrencies with physical backing.
Michael Mohr, Global Head of Xtrackers Product at DWS, a manager with 1.19 trillion euros in total assets under management as of June 30, 2026, points out that the new vehicle simplifies the selection and integration of these types of assets into the portfolio.
The ETC replicates the evolution of the MSCI Crypto Market Select Index, composed of up to ten of the largest cryptocurrencies that meet certain criteria: liquidity, denomination in US dollars, a trading history of at least six months, and listing on multiple platforms backed by institutional custodians, such as Zodia Custody.
The index composition is reviewed quarterly. The cryptocurrency with the highest market capitalization has a maximum weighting of 50%, while the second largest is limited to 35%, with minimum weightings of 0.5% or 1% for smaller or newly incorporated assets.
The ETC positions have physical backing: the underlying cryptocurrencies are held in cold storage solutions, custody systems not connected to the internet. The product does not include meme coins or stablecoins, and does not require the investor to have a digital wallet or direct access to the blockchain.
In managing the vehicle, Xtrackers relies on Galaxy, a specialized cryptocurrency provider with whom it has been collaborating since the launch of its Bitcoin and Ethereum ETCs approximately two years ago.
"For many investors, asset selection and their integration into the investment structure are currently the main challenges when investing in cryptocurrencies. With our new ETC, we offer investors a portfolio component that addresses this challenge and thus facilitates access to this dynamic asset class."
