State Street IM has taken a further step in its diversification strategy towards private markets by announcing a strategic minority investment in Coller Capital, one of the world's leading managers specializing in the secondary market for private assets.
The agreement also includes a collaboration between both firms to develop joint solutions and drive innovation in different customer segments, at a time when the appetite for alternative assets continues to grow among large institutional investors.
With over 5 trillion dollars under management and presence in more than 60 countries, State Street IM seeks to strengthen its exposure to private markets through alliances with leading managers in specific niches. In this case, the firm relies on the experience of Coller Capital, which has 35 years of track record in the secondary market and manages more than 46,000 million dollars in assets through closed institutional funds and open vehicles for qualified investors.
The agreement will allow State Street's clients to access Coller's capabilities in private equity and private credit secondaries, while Coller itself will use the resources from the operation to accelerate its growth strategy and expand access to the secondary market to a more diverse base of investors and geographies.
The secondary market has established itself as a strategic component within asset allocation. According to industry data, more than 160,000 million dollars were traded in 2024 in these types of operations, representing an average annual growth of 16% over the last decade. Forecasts suggest that the volume could reach nearly 500,000 million dollars by 2030.
“Institutional investors and their clients are increasingly demanding diversification and differentiated investment options, and secondary markets offer precisely that,” said Yie-Hsin Hung, CEO of State Street Investment Management. “This strategic relationship with Coller Capital exemplifies our commitment to offering innovative solutions and better outcomes for our clients,” she added.
For his part, Jeremy Coller, founder and investment director of the British firm, highlighted that the entry of State Street as a partner strengthens its global positioning: “State Street is a trusted benchmark for investors around the world. Together, we will expand access to the secondary market and help investors leverage their potential for diversification and long-term profitability”.
The operation, of a minority nature, will not affect the investment process or the daily management of Coller Capital. The funds obtained will be fully reinvested in the business to support its growth.
Goldman Sachs acted as financial advisor to State Street, with Sullivan & Cromwell and Ropes & Gray as legal advisors. On behalf of Coller Capital, Morgan Stanley was the financial advisor and Kirkland & Ellis the legal advisor.
