The president of the CNMV, Carlos San Basilio, has been appointed as chairman of the Asset Management Committee (IMSC) by the European Securities and Markets Authority (ESMA, in its English acronym).
The ESMA Asset Management Committee is entrusted with the functions of coordinating the supervision and authorization of fund managers and the assets included in them and the application of the rules related to these matters. It also deals with the development of technical standards, advising on these matters to the European Commission and the development of recommendations and guidelines on asset management.
This appointment is a recognition of the relevance of the CNMV in the European regulatory field and reflects one of the priorities that the Spanish supervisor has set, investor protection.
The president of the CNMV replaces Derville Rowland in the position, member of the Executive Council of the AMLA and former deputy governor of the Central Bank of Ireland.
The ESMA committees are groups of experts formed by technicians and by the supervisory authorities of the states, and are responsible for the development of the lines of action of the body in their respective areas.
ESMA is the independent authority of the European Union that brings together the national securities market supervisors of the EU. Its objective is to promote investor protection and the stability of financial markets, as well as to ensure a homogeneous application of the securities market supervision regulations in all member states.
